For a positive change to your life

Philippa Featherstone

BSc(Hons), RGN, RM, Clinical Hypnotherapist BSCH (Affil)

I originally trained as a Registered General Nurse and then as a Registered Midwife.  I have now been a midwife for twenty years.

I have worked both in the hospital and community settings and am currently working as a Community Midwife.   I have assisted many women to have their babies both in hospital and at home and have always believed that women have an instinctive ability to birth their own babies with minimal help from the medical profession.

Because of my belief in ensuring women should be having individualised care provided by competent and confident practitioners I have also undertaken further training at Masters level to be  a Supervisor of Midwives.  This means I am responsible for a group of midwives in the Cambridge area, ensuring they are practicing at a high level of expertise, with up to date knowledge and providing the best care possible to the families that they look after.  Being a Supervisor also means that I am there to assist women to have the type of birth that they want, in the setting that they want, ensuring that they are aware of all options available to them and they can make an informed decision about their care.

I am also a clinical hypnotherapist and have a diploma from the London College of Clinical Hypnosis.  This is a fascinating subject and hypnotherapy can help people in many areas of their life.  It can be useful for helping with anxieties, boosting self confidence, dealing with phobias, stopping smoking, eating disorders, and pain relief.

I have felt that many of these topics have a relevance to the area of childbirth and I therefore wanted to study this further.  So I have now been trained as a HypnoBirth® instructor.  I can help provide couples with information about pregnancy and childbirth that they can use in their daily lives both before, during and after birth enabling them to lead calm, relaxed, empowered and positive lives.
